Metro ethernet offers many advantages to urban businesses that need large broadband pipes. Depending on customer location (and local access), ethernet is offered at 10, 44, 88, 100 and 1000 megabits per second (mbps). 10 mbps ethernet can be provided over copper telephone wires, or over DS1 circuits. 44, 88, 100 mbps ethernet is provided over DS3 circuits. 1000 mbps ethernet, also referred to as Gig-E, is provided over fiber. Ethernet works extremely well for all applications provided by other forms of data bandwidth, such as T1, DS3 and OC (optical carrier) circuits. Ethernet is provided with the same service level guarantees offered with these other three types of circuits. Ethernet provides point-to-point circuits, MPLS (multiprotocol label switching) networking, direct internet access and voice service.
